Do lash extensions hurt?

Lash extensions should not hurt during or after their application. A lash service should be a comfortable and relaxing experience. If your lash extensions are causing you pain or discomfort you should inform your lash tech immediately.

If your lashes hurt during application there could be a few reasons for this:

  • gel pads or tape sitting too close to the eye;

  • eyes are not fully closed or are are fluttering and being exposed to fumes from the lash adhesive;

  • an allergy to the lash adhesive;

  • stuck lashes or “stickies” being separated from each other;

  • a sensitivity to lash adhesive fumes.

If your eyes are uncomfortable during your lash service you should let your lash artist know immediately so they can make the necessary adjustments. If the pain continues or is severe the service must be stopped. Eye health and safety should be the first priority.

If your lash extensions hurt after your appointment it could be one of the following:

  • lashes were applied too close to the eyelid;

  • natural lashes were not isolated properly and there is an extension or extensions applied to one or more natural lashes. As your lashes grow out they can pull each other out before they are ready to shed;

  • too much adhesive was used;

  • an allergic reaction;

  • chemical conjunctivitis - red and sore eyes from exposure to fumes from lash adhesive;

  • a ‘bruise’ on the conjunctiva from a gel pad or tape sitting too close to the eye;

  • eyes were not properly closed during the lash appointment. This can be from talking during the service or having caffeine before your appointment.

  • lash extensions are too heavy for your natural lashes to support.

In most cases any redness or pain should disappear within 72 hours. If you have any questions or concerns about eye redness or pain after your appointment you should speak with your doctor.

Absolutely no lash artist wants to see their client with red eyes when they open them at the end of the service. Worse, to hear that they are in pain. You should address your concerns with your lash artist so that they can make adjustments where possible to prevent it from happening again.

If your lash artist seems disinterested or unhelpful it may be a good idea to switch to someone else.
